Firestem is the common name for Penstemon rubicundus which is a medium sized shrub with masses of brick red flowers with a pure white throat late summer and early autumn.  The shrub grows to approximately 90 cm in height and 50cm in width.  Penstemon rubicundus prefers a sunny aspect with moist but well drained soil.  It is a vigorous grower  and will tolerate light to moderate frosts and some shade. A medium prune and feed with Osmocote Outdoors Trees & Shrubs after flowering will keep the plant compact and healthy.

Penstemons are a great addition to any garden.  They can be used as a specimen plant, tub plant,  en masse for an eye catching effect or even as a low hedge.  Firestem looks good planted with other Penstemons like Gladiator, Swanlake Osprey and Flamingo.  Done this way and you will have a sea of color swaying in the late summer breeze.  Firestem also looks great intermingled with Gaura’Corrie’s Gold’, Lavandula ‘Hazel’ or  Campanula  ‘Cherry Bells’

Penstemon rubicundus is one of a range of Penstemons collected from around the world by Larkman Nurseries.  Collect a range to add color and variety to your garden.
